Bonne année! Happy New Year! I hope that you all enjoyed some quality family time over the holidays :)

We have had a great start to 2017. As some of you may have heard, I told the students back in December about "Le jeu des boutons"/The button game. This is a challenge where students can try to speak using as much French as possible. We started today with each student receiving 10 buttons. Every time I hear them speaking in French, they get another button! But, if I catch them speaking in English, they have to give a button away... (of course, they are allowed to ask me how to say something in French if they do not know how). At the end of the week, we will count our buttons to see who has the most! The 2 students with the most buttons, plus one honourable mention (a student who has made great effort) will get to choose a prize from "La boite aux surprises" (the surprise box). The same students cannot win two weeks in a row (back to back), and we will be continuing this game until June so I have assured the class that everyone will get a turn to choose a prize-- as long as they make an effort!

The game has been met with a lot of excitement and a lot of French being used in the classroom! I am so happy to hear all this French as we start the new year!

We also learned about New Year's vocabulary today-- we practiced counting backward in French, and saying "2017" in French. We also coloured a short story about how New Year's Eve is celebrated.

We then held our own mini New Year's celebration-- we counted backward from 30, and the students enjoyed blowing "les flûtes de fête" (blowouts/noisemakers) that I gave to each student. We had a lot of fun!

Tomorrow we will be talking about resolutions/goal setting, and the students will do a writing activity where they set some personal goals to achieve before the end of the school year. We will revisit these periodically over the coming months, and monitor our progress toward our goals!

Have a great night,

Mme Bena
